Diesel vs. petrol car decider

Diesel vs. petrol car decider

This question is often asked many buyers. Rising petrol prices are fuelling this topic. Not everyone can afford rs. 60/lt price tag of petrol. Buyers are now looking for a substitute fuel of petrol. And the closest competitors are
1.    Diesel, and
2.    Compressed natural gas.
3.

Now deciding on whether which form of car to buy, involves the following steps.
1.    Find out ur daily travelling needs:
If you travel more than 50kms daily, then a diesel car is recommended. But if you travel more than 80kms daily, then a CNG car is highly recommended.

2.    Find out ur price bracket:
Diesel cars come at a premium. The difference between the prices of the petrol Lxi model (4.09lakhs) and the diesel Ldi model (5.99lakhs) of  MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT IS Rs. 90 thousand.
And if you purchase a petrol Lxi model and install a CNG kit, then it’ll cost you somewhere around 4.5lakh rupees.

CALCULATION PROCESS:
Now if u travel 100kms daily on a petrol car;
·         Assuming the petrol prices at rs. 60, and
·         Assuming the mileage of ur car at 15km/l,
·         U’LL need 6lts of petrol every day.
·         So ur daily fuel bill is somewhere around rs. 360.
Now if u travel on a diesel car;
·         Assuming diesel prices at rs. 45, and
·         Assuming mileage of ur car at 18km/l,
·         U’ll need 5.5lts of diesel every day.
·         So ur daily fuel bill is now, rs. 250.

Ø  In a PETROL car,
Ø  ur monthly fuel bill is rs. 10800.
Ø  But if u own a DIESEL car,
Ø  ur bill will amount to rs. 7500.
Ø  U save rs. 3300 month.
Ø  And rs. 39600 annually.
Ø  So u will recover that extra 90THOUSAND RUPEES in 3 years.
But if u travel comparatively less than above, then pls calculate the recovery period. Generally the recovery period shouldn’t exceed 5 years. This is because the life period of a diesel car is less than that of petrol.
Ø  WHY SHOULD YOU BUY A DIESEL CAR:
·         Diesel cars are more fun to drive in cities because of the enormous torque you get at the initial rpm .
·         The price per liter is lesser than that of petrol.

Ø  WHY YOU SHOULDN’T BUY A DIESEL CAR:
·         Diesel is more harmful for the environment.
·         Engine life is very less than that of the petrol.
·         You cannot rev it to redlines [ ;) ]

##SMART CHOICE##
Compressed natural gas.
Generally you save 30% on fuel bills when you switch over from petrol to diesel.
And when you switch from diesel to CNG, u save additionally 25%.
In simple words, when you switch from petrol to CNG, you save a whopping 55% on your fuel bills!!!!!!

Ø  It’s Advantages:
·         You get to buy a petrol car and enjoy the benefits of revving it to the redlines.
·         You save at least 30000 rupees initially. (When switching over from diesel to gas)
·         It is environmentally very healthy.
·         Petrol costs nearly rs. 60 per liter and gas costs around rs. 30 per kg.

Ø  Concerns:
·         Lack of filling stations causes delay in filling time.
·         Lack of company fitted gas kit causing lack of awareness of this choice of fuel.
·         Very less choices when buying brand new cng car.
·         Cng erodes the performance of a petrol car in long run.
·         If you install a cng kit from a unauthorized vendor, you end up defaulting your warrantee period of your car.

UNDERSTANDING TORQUE AND B.H.P. (BRAKE HORSE POWER)

UNDERSTANDING TORQUE AND B.H.P

I.                         TORQUE:

1.     WHAT IS TORQUE?
The explanation is simple. Torque is nothing but the “PULLING CAPACITY”. When we say an engine produces 150NM of torque, it signifies that the engine can lift nearly 160KG FORCE from a standstill.
In vehicles, we need torque to pull the car. So whenever your vehicle’s engine is below 2000 rpm and the force that moves you till around 3500rpm is TORQUE. When your engine revs more than 3500rpm, the force that pulls you is not TORQUE.
2.     WHEN DOES ONE NEED TORQUE?
Ø  We need torque when our vehicle has to move something heavy (be it a payload or a healthy rider).
Ø  We need torque to overtake other slow moving traffic on the roads.
Ø  We need torque when changing gears.
3.     WHEN IS “TORQUE” THE DECIDING FACTOR WHEN PURCHASING A VEHICLE?
When you travel mostly in cities where you remain mostly below 4000rpm and you change gears very often and where overtake is very essential.
4.     DIESEL ENGINE HAS THE MAXIMUM TORQUE.
Yes, diesel motors pack a very powerful punch of torque. This is why especially in India; consumers prefer diesel cars more than the petrol cars.
For example, MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT (PETROL) HAS a 1.2LT ENGINE THAT PRODUCES MAXIMUM OF 113NM TORQUE @ 4500RPM.
AND A SIMILAR MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT (DIESEL) HAS A 1.3LT ENGINE THAT PRODUCES MAXIMUM OF 190NM TORQUE @ JUST 2000RPM!!
So it’s clear that a diesel engine has a better torque, which is a blessing for a person driving in traffic congested cities.
II.                   BRAKE HORSE POWER:
1.     WHAT IS TORQUE?
Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower before the loss in power caused by the gearbox, alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as power steering pump, muffled exhaust system, etc. it is the force that moves your vehicle when it’s engine is above 3500rpm.
2.     WHEN DOES ONE NEED BHP?
·         WHEN YOU DRIVE MOSTLY ON HIGHWAYS OR FREEWAYS
·         WHEN YOU CAN DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE AT HIGH SPEEDS
3.     WHEN IS “BHP” THE DECIDING FACTOR WHEN PURCHASING A VEHICLE?
When you travel mostly on a highway or a road with no traffic and it allows you to touch high speeds.
4.     PETROL ENGINE HAS THE MAXIMUM BHP.
Again, I’ll take the example of a standard MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT.
Its DIESEL 1.3LT ENGINE PRODUCES A MAXIMUM POWER OF 75BHP @ 4000RPM.
AND ITS PETROL 1.2LT PRODUCES A MAXIMUM POWER OF 85BHP @ 6000RPM.
So the petrol engine can rev hard, and makes you smile hard when you travel @ high speeds.
